Exhibition “Atmospheres of Stanisław Gałka – Paintings from a Private Collection”

Stanisław Gałka, known as the uncrowned king of Tatra landscape painters of the interwar period and the early post-war years, captured the extraordinary beauty of the Tatras in his works. Although criticized by some avant-garde representatives like Witkacy and Rafał Malczewski, Gałka gained recognition for his ability to convey the soul of the mountain landscape, as evidenced by Jerzy Soplica’s words: “Gałka is a poet of the Tatras, his heart is full of love for their pure beauty.”

This festival, with a history dating back to the Second Polish Republic, is one of the most important cultural events in Europe, bringing together folklore groups from around the world. Its origins can be found in the idea of the “Union of Lands” by Władysław Orkan, who wanted to unite groups living in the Polish Carpathians. Since its debut as the “Festival of the Mountains” in 1935, it has evolved to become a place for presenting authentic folklore and folk culture.

About the Festival:

The Mountain Folklore Festival is an annual meeting of cultures and traditions of highlanders from around the world. Since 1968, when foreign groups were invited for the first time, the festival has had an international character. The groups compete for the prestigious “Golden Axe” award in various categories: authentic folklore, artistically developed, and stylized. Despite initial controversies, the competition format has gained recognition and contributes to the popularization of traditional highlander culture.

This year’s main theme is “Rituals and customs of the Carpathian inhabitants and highlanders from around the world.” Participants have the opportunity to experience the cultural richness of regions from Indonesia, Morocco, Turkey, Spain, Serbia, Slovenia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, to Poland.
